Wedding Invitation Styles

There’s different styled cards for wedding invitations? Yes, of course!

While there are many articles about wedding invitation wording, there’s still confusion about the different styles. Some are more popular than others but it’s obvious that wedding invitations are one of the first things couples do.

Wedding invitation cards have been kind of forgotten in the last few years due to budgeting purposes but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with them. Although things are moving to digital, wedding invitations are primarily mailed.

If you want to WOW your guests, your invitation card style should definitely catch their eye. Remember, this is the very first thing they’ll receive in regards to your wedding.

Wedding invitation cards are a lot of fun because there’s so much you can do with them! The best part about wedding invitations is that you can always match your wedding theme.

What are the types of invitation? Let’s get started.

Standard Card

You’ve probably seen this card style everywhere! It looks like a postcard and one-dimensional. For this style, engraving or letterhead looks the best. Minimalist and elegant yet still budget-friendly.

There are TONS of option for the standard card. You can use a template from The Knot to print out your card or make it yourself using Canva. It can be as simple as typing it out and printing it. Or, you could hire a calligrapher to handwrite all your invitations. Just because it’s one-dimensional doesn’t mean it has to look boring! Use your wedding color themes to have your guests excited.

What to include in a wedding invitation? The front usually has your and your partner’s name, and the date, time, and location of the wedding. The backside has information about where to RSVP, wedding website, transportation, tourist attractions, and more!

Bifold Card

The bifold card is also called the folder or fold-over. Why? Because you fold the paper vertically so it opens like a book. This style choice is one of the most popular since it gives a nice, luxurious feel without being overly priced.

On the cover, you can include a picture from your engagement photoshoot and keep it simple. On the inside, you can insert details about your wedding (date, time, location) and a response card pocket.

TIP: On the back of your response card, write a number. Then on an excel sheet, write down what numbers you gave to your guests. That way, if the guest forgets to write their name on the card (which they will), it’ll be a lot easier to figure out who the card is from. I’m assuming you don’t want to play the “who sent this RSVP” game.

Gatefold Invitation Style

This one is my personal favorite. The gatefold card has two panels that open from the middle like a barn door. The gatefold pairs really well with a ribbon or tie as well. You can play around with it.

Inside the “doors,” you can put your wedding information and pockets for a response card or anything related to your wedding. This is definitely worth considering if you want your invitation card to look stylish but don’t want to go overboard.

Boxed Invitations

How do you make your wedding invitations stand out? This is it! Put together by calligraphers or designers, the boxed invitation is definitely fancy. It kind of reminds me of the Disney princess movie, Cinderella, when someone comes to hand her evil stepmother a ball dance invitation.

Usually for boxed invitations, there is also a small gift inside of it that resembles your wedding. For example, if you’re having your wedding in Las Vegas, you might include a poker chip from the casinos. Or if it’s a beach wedding, you can include a shell or sand bottle.

The boxed invitations are not only expensive to make, but also to ship. So keep that in mind if you are looking to go with this style.

Invitation Card Prices

Invitation cards are usually priced by the set – the invitation, the reply card, and the envelopes. However, prices vary from $2 to $70.

It all depends on what type of paper and design you decide to go with. If you are looking for something that is budget friendly, check out your local department store. Most places will have standard-bearers like Crane & Co. Or you can always design it yourself.

Do note that if you decide to print your invitations online, there is always a possibility that it may not print correctly. The worst part is, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to return or redo anything. So if this is the route you want to go, double check everything and spell check!

If you are looking for something a little more upscale and luxurious, talk to a custom designer. They’ll give you samples and work with you to create the invitation of your dream. Otherwise, high-end companies such as Tiffany & Co. also have options.

Wax Seal Stamps

Wax seal stamps have been trendy lately with all the customizations businesses are able to do. One creative way to elevate your wedding invitations is by having a custom wax seal stamp. You can buy these on Etsy and support a small business owner! The stamp can be you and your partner’s initials, wedding date, or a symbol that represents your love.

Most seal stamps also come with sealing wax. You can get your wedding theme color for the wax! Also, you can get creative and add sparkles to the wax or a small object. It’s so unique and definitely a beautiful element for your invitation. Finish it off with a ribbon and your invitation will look elegant.
